Himachal Pradesh steps forward to legalize cannabis cultivation

The state of Himachal Pradesh can very well be next to legalize the cultivation of marijuana. In November 2018, C.M, Jai Ram Thakur said that the state is considering legalising weed. However, only after ensuring its legality.

The demand to legalise weed has been growing in the state. This is owing to the legalising of hemp in Uttarakhand. The Himachali areas in the Kullu district are gaining fame across the world for their high-potency cannabis. This is making many in the government feel that legalizing the cultivation can help local cultivators.

Both the BJP and Congress leaders in the area are supporting the move.

It has been banned in the country since the colonial era. However, cannabis has been a part of the Indian culture in the form of hemp. Researchers track its use back to the Vedic Era. Thus it’s no surprise that the country may slowly be waking up its pharmaceutical and commercial abilities.

In April 2017, the Ministry of Health and Welfare issued a licence to CSIR – IIIM and BOHECO to grow cannabis.
