What is Migraine?

A migraine is a neurological disease characterised by a headache that can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, usually on one side of the head. Migraine attacks can last for hours to days with pain so severe, it interferes with your daily activities.

Migraine may also be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound.

Types of Headaches
There are over 150 types of headaches. These are divided into two categories-primary and secondary headaches. A migraine is a primary headache. That is to say, it is not caused by a different medical condition.

Migraine can affect different people in different ways and the triggers, severity, symptoms, and frequency can vary from one person to the next. Some people have more than one episode each week while others have them only occasionally.

Stages of Migraine

Migraine attacks can progress through several phases, each with characteristic symptoms that vary in severity and duration. The different stages of a migraine stages are:

Prodome

Prodome stage usually begins 1-2 days before the attack. Symptoms during this stage can include:

  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Food cravings
  • Mood changes from depression to euphoria
  • Hyperactivity
  • Frequent yawning
  • Increased urination
  • Constipation
  • Fluid retention
  • Neck stiffness
  • Irritability

Aura

The aura occurs after the prodome stage. The symptoms of aura usually stem from your nervous system and often involves vision. They usually start gradually, over a 5-20 minute period and lasts less than an hour. Common symptoms include:

  • Tunnel vision
  • Seeing black dots, wavy lines, flashes of light, or hallucinations
  • Tingling or numbness on one side of your body
  • Heavy feeling in your arms and legs
  • Sensitivity to smell, taste, and/or touch
  • Ringing sensation in ears

Attack

A migraine headache often begins as a dull ache and grows into throbbing pain. The pain can move from one side of your head to the other, can be in the front of your head, or can feel like it’s affecting your entire head.

A migraine attack usually lasts from 4 to 72 hours, if untreated. Feelings of nausea and vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, smell, or touch can also accompany the headache.

Postdome

After a migraine attack, you may feel drained, confused, and washed out for up to a day. Common symptoms of this stage include:

  • Feeling tired, wiped out, or cranky
  • Muscle pain or weakness
  • Food cravings or lack of appetite
  • Feeling unusually refreshed or happy

Types of Migraine

There are 8 types of established migraine types.

Ocular Migraine

An ocular migraine is an episode, usually in one eye, where one or more distortions can occur for up to one hour. An attack often begins with a blind spot in the central area of vision which can start small and get larger. This is often followed by an aura stage with other visual distortions such as a spot of light moving about in your peripheral and central vision. An ocular migraine attack can occur with or without an accompanying headache.

Vestibular Migraine

Vestibular migraine is distinctive for its wide range of symptoms including imbalance, ear pressure, and tinnitus (ringing sensation in ears) for variable duration along with non-headache symptoms such as difficulty seeing, neck pain and spasms, intolerance for bright light and noises, spatial disorientation, increased anxiety, and confusion.

Migraine with Brainstem Aura

This type of migraine occurs when aura symptoms are of the type thought to originate from the brainstem but without any accompanying motor weakness. According to the third edition of The International Classification of Headache Disorders, migraine with aura should include at least two of the following symptoms:

  1. Slurred or slow speech (dysarthria)
  2. Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  3. Partial hearing loss (hypoacusis)
  4. Vertigo
  5. Double vision (diplopia)
  6. Impaired coordination (ataxia)
  7. Decreased level of consciousness

Hemiplegic Migraine

This is a rare type of migraine where an individual experiences motor weakness on one side of the body, usually accompanies or followed by a headache. This weakness is a form of aura and is associated with at least one other aura symptom such as visual changes. Hemiplegic migraine may affect only part of the body such as just the hand or multiple parts such as both the hand and arm. Weakness may also occur on the entire side of the body.

Severe attacks of hemiplegic migraine can progress to seizure, coma, or decreased consciousness.

Abdominal Migraine

Abdominal migraine is characterised by recurring episodes of moderate to severe belly pain with nausea in children. It may or may not be accompanied by vomiting. Typically, there is no associated headache and the pain lasts from 2 hours to 3 days without any symptoms between episodes.

Silent Migraine (Migraine Without Head Pain)

Patients with silent migraine experience phases of a migraine including the aura phase but do not experience the head pain. Symptoms include nausea, runny nose, visual disturbances, dizziness, brain fog, and weakness.

Sinus Migraine

Sinus migraine is characterised by the combination of sinus-like symptoms along with the ICHD-3 diagnostic criteria of migraine. These may feel like an infection in the sinuses. You may feel pressure around your eyes, cheeks, and forehead.

Status Migrainosus

Also known as intactable migraine, this is a migraine that lasts longer than 72 hours. The symptoms of status migrainosus are more severe than a typical migraine and abortive medications are usually ineffective.  This condition is highly difficult to treat and may require hospitalization to manage pain and prevent dehydration due to vomiting.

What Causes Migraine?

The causes of migraine aren’t fully understood. Medical experts, however, believe that genetics and environmental factors appear to play a role.

A change in the brainstem and its interactions with the trigeminal nerve and imbalances in brain chemicals might be involved in triggering migraine.

Migraine Triggers

Some common migraine triggers include:

  • Hormonal changes in women.
  • Stress
  • Drinks
  • Sleep changes
  • Sensory stimuli
  • Physical factors
  • Food additives
  • Medications
  • Aged or processed foods
  • Weather changes

Migraine Frequency

Doctors divide migraines into 3 levels of frequency:

  1. Episodic Migraine: means you get a migraine now and then.
  2. High-frequency Episodic Migraine: means you get 8-14 headache days per month.
  3. Chronic Migraine: means you have a headache on more than 15 days of the month and 8 of those have migraine features such as throbbing or pulsating pain, moderate to intense head pain, nausea or vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, etc.

How can CBD help with Migraine?

CBD oil has got a lot of attention for its powerful pain-relieving properties. And an increasing number of experts are advocating its use for migraine.

CBD is a cannabinoid with anticonvulsive, analgesic, antiemetic, and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties position it as a promising compound for both acute and preventative treatment of migraine pain.

Research on the use of CBD for Migraine

A handful of clinical research studies have examined the use of CBD to treat migraine. A 2016 study found that in a group of medical cannabis users, the frequency of migraine reduced from nearly 10 per month to 4 per month.

A 2017 review of cannabis treatment for headaches highlighted existing research, patient surveys, and case reports that show the efficiency of cannabis for migraine and other headache disorders.

Another review from the year 2018 described experimental evidence for the use of cannabinoids, such as CBD, in the treatment of migraine, other headaches, and chronic pain.

Potential Benefits of CBD for Migraine

  • Pain Relief: CBD’s strong analgesic properties can help tackle severe migraine pain within minutes. Not only is CBD oil effective is countering neurological and localised pain, it inhibits pain sensations in the brain.
  • Reducing Nausea and Vomiting: CBD has anti-emetic properties in that it is highly effective against vomiting and nausea.
  • Improving Mood & Sleep: Migraine pains can often cause lack of sleep and psychological distress. CBD oil is a relaxant that alters the reaction of the serotonin in the body, uplifting mood and reducing stress. It also decreases the time it takes for the brain to fall asleep and promotes uninterrupted sleep.

Types of CBD Oil for Migraine in India

When you buy CBD oil for migraine in India, you’re most likely to come across three types of extracts.

These are differentiated on the basis of how an extract has been processed.

Another way to view the differentiation between different types of CBD oil is to identify what other chemical compounds (in addition to CBD) are present, or not present, in the oil.

Each CBD extract has its own pros and cons and offers a distinct experience.

CBD Isolate

CBD oil that contains only and only CBD. The oil is processed to remove all the other naturally-occurring chemical compounds in cannabis (cannabinoids other than CBD, terpenes, flavonoids, etc.).

Isolates are the purest form of CBD and are the safest type of extract for beginners. Typically, isolates do not have any taste or odour. However, additional flavouring may be added.

In comparison to the other two types of extracts, it is less potent and might not be as effective in cases of severe and chronic pain.

CBD isolates do not contain THC, the high-causing chemical compound, and therefore, are non-intoxicating in nature.

Broad-spectrum CBD

Broad-spectrum CBD oil for migraine in India contains in addition to CBD, other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, etc. except for THC.

THC is the chemical compound that causes the high when people consume cannabis.

In the case of broad-spectrum CBD oil, the extract is processed to particularly remove THC.

The purpose behind this is to increase the potency of the product and eliminate the risks of intoxication at the same time.

In comparison to CBD isolate, broad-spectrum CBD oil is more potent because here, all the chemical compounds work together to give an enhanced therapeutic benefit.

That is to say, the medicinal benefits of each individual cannabinoid, terpene, flavonoid, etc. combine with each other and give a more wholesome benefit to the body.

But because this extract does not contain any THC, there is no risk of intoxication at all.

Full-spectrum CBD

The most potent of the three, full-spectrum CBD oil for migraine in India contains all the naturally-occurring chemical compounds in cannabis. That is, it contains CBD, other cannabinoids including THC, terpenes and flavonoids, etc.

Because this extract is subject to the least amount of processing, it is the most potent among the three.

Here too, the medicinal benefits of all the chemical compounds combine together (including those of THC) to provide a wholesome relief.

However, the presence of THC may cause mild to moderate intoxication.

How to use CBD Oil for Migraine?

When you buy CBD oil for migraine in India, you can use it in 3 different ways.

Sublingual Consumption

Also called oral consumption, this method refers to placing the CBD drops directly underneath the tongue and letting it absorb for 30-45 seconds before swallowing.

It is the fastest and most direct method to experience the effects of CBD. Through sublingual consumption, CBD directly enters the bloodstream in 5-7 minutes, and the pain-relieving effects can be felt within 10 minutes of consumption. The effects will last for 2-3 hours.

Caution: While using CBD oil sublingually, ensure to not touch the tip of the dropper to the tongue or any internal of the mouth. Careless contact may induce bacteria to the bottle of CBD oil, causing degradation of the product.

Addition to Food

A common way to use CBD oil is to add it to our everyday food and drink items such as salads, cereals, smoothies, shakes, etc. This method is particularly helpful for masking the strong taste and aroma of CBD oil.

In comparison to sublingual consumption, this method takes more time to show effects. That is because when consumed via food, CBD first passes through the liver and the digestive system, where it is broken down before entering the bloodstream.

This process can take 40-50 minutes and the effects of CBD are felt within an hour of consumption. However, the effects last for 4-6 hours, longer than they do in the case of sublingual consumption.

Mixing CBD oil with food is a good way to use CBD regularly to improve overall health and decrease the frequency and symptoms of migraine. While experiencing a migraine attack, administering CBD oil sublingually is recommeded.

CBD Oil for Migraine in India | Dosage Guide

Administering dosage is a very important part of using CBD oil for migraine. In India, CBD oil comes in a glass bottle with a built-in dropper in the cap. This dropper has markings in mL that help measures the dosage.

The amount of CBD oil you should take depends on factors such as:

  • Body weight
  • Individual body chemistry
  • Severity of the condition being targeted
  • Concentration of CBD

Ideally, it is recommended to start with the minimum possible dosage and increase it gradually depending on how the body takes it. To quote an example, start with 20 to 40mg of CBD per day and increase this amount by 5mg after 10 days.

How to calculate the dosage for CBD Oil?

To calculate the dosage of CBD oil, we need to consider the strength and the quantity of the extract.

The quantity represents the total amount of oil that is present in a bottle and strength represents the amount of CBD in that oil. Quantity and strength are measured in mL and mg respectively.

If you have a 10mL bottle of 1000mg, then 1mL will have 1000/10=100mg of CBD.

So, if your dosage is 50mg of CBD per day, you need to fill half the dropper (up to the 0.5mL mark).

Watch Out for the Side Effects

Although CBD is a generally safe and well-tolerated chemical compound, it can cause side effects such as nausea, dizziness, changes in weight and appetite, and diarrhoea. If you experience any of these symptoms, keep yourself hydrated and wait for them to pass.

What to keep in mind before Buying CBD Oil for Migraine in India?

It is true that CBD will not get you high and its side effects are minimal and easily manageable. It is unlikely to have a negative impact on your cognitive ability. However, it is important to be cautious while using CBD oil for migraine in India if:

  • You’re taking blood-thinners because CBD can speed the blood-thinning effect of medicines.
  • Are taking anti-depressants or frequently consuming alcohol. CBD can increase the depressant effect of alcohol which is why taking CBD and alcohol together are not advisable.
