[DIY] Raw Vegan Hemp Milk

In our post about the benefits of hemp milk, we established that it is a healthy and ethical dairy alternative. Hemp milk is a completely plant-based extract and is, therefore, a favourite among vegetarians and vegans. But it is a superfood for everyone. Irrespective of whether or not you are a vegetarian, hemp milk can be a healthier alternative.

And the best part? You can make it yourself!

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 5 minutes


½ cup hemp seeds
2 cups water (can extend up to 3-4 cups; use less water for thicker, creamier milk)
1 pinch sea salt
½ tsp. vanilla extract (optional)
2 tbsp. of cocoa or cocoa powder (for chocolate milk, optional)
1 whole date, pitted OR 15 ml maple syrup (for sweetness, optional)
¼ cup fresh berries (for berry milk, optional)


  1. Place the hemp seeds, water, salt, and other additional add-ins to a food processor or a blender. Blend this mixture for about 1 minute or until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy.
  2. Scoop out a sample to taste the mixture. Add more dates, salt, or vanilla as required.
  3. Strain the liquid through cheesecloth to remove the hemp seed particles. This is an optional step entirely based on preference.
  4. Transfer the milk to a sealed container and refrigerate. It can stay in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days. Hemp milk is best enjoyed when cold but again, that depends on preference.

Tip: Pour it into your smoothies and baked goods to enjoy the deliciousness.
