A ‘New Wave’ of Food Products Will Hit India With FSSAI’s Regulations Allowing Hemp to be Used as Food Source

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a notification on November 15, 2021, stating that hemp seed, hemp seed oil, and hemp seed flour can be sold as food or used as ingredients in food products, as long as they meet the required standards.

Abhinav Bhaskar, the Founder of Ananta Hemp Works based in Delhi NCR, expressed appreciation for the FSSAI regulations on hemp as a food source. He mentioned that with government support, they anticipate the industry to thrive and capture a significant portion of the market in the future, not just in medicinal, nutritional, and personal care sectors, but also in textile, agriculture, and other industries. Bhaskar aims to promote Indian hemp globally.

Vikram Bir Singh, Co-Founder of Ananta Hemp Works, acknowledged the transformative impact of FSSAI’s notification on the use of hemp as a food source in India. He highlighted that previously, there were no standards for hemp products, resulting in warnings to manufacturers about illegal sales. Singh predicts that in the coming years, a variety of food products containing hemp seeds and hemp seed oil will enter the market, providing consumers with healthy choices.

Hemp and marijuana belong to the Cannabis plant family and contain THC and CBD, along with other compounds. CBD, extracted from the leaves, has pain-relieving, muscle relaxant, and mood-enhancing properties. In India, only hemp with less than 0.3% THC is permitted, ensuring that consuming hemp products does not produce a psychoactive effect.

Ayurvedic physicians have been using Vijaya, also known as Bhanga and cannabis, an herbal drug, to treat various diseases and lifestyle disorders, with positive outcomes when administered correctly. Ayurveda, a branch of medicine, recognizes the use of cannabis leaves in the production of Ayurvedic medicines.

Ananta Hemp Works holds an Ayush license to manufacture hemp-based medicines and nutritional products. They have introduced four product lines, including HempNutrition, Hemp Personal Care, Hemp Wellness, and a segment dedicated to pet products called CannaEase PetWell. Their goal is to promote overall well-being and holistic health through natural hemp-based products.

On November 18, 2021, Ananta celebrated its one-year anniversary and established Ayurvedic clinics called Ananta Vijaya Wellness clinics in Delhi, where they provide hemp products to the public. These clinics collaborate with prominent Ayurvedic doctors to ensure the availability of hemp-based medicines.

Dr. Piyush Juneja, an Ayurvedic Consultant, National Coordinator of IMA AYUS, Certified Medical Cannabis Practitioner, and Founder of Indianvaidyas.com, commended the ethical practice and the significance of Ananta’s Vijaya Wellness Clinics. He personally prescribed Ananta’s CannaEase hemp-based medicines to several patients and observed positive responses in terms of efficacy.

Ananta’s mission is to offer plant-based medicine, nutrition, and chemical-free personal care products to everyone, following a sustainable and clean brand approach. They actively advocate for the Vijaya plant’s importance in our lives and strive to create awareness and share valuable information about the plant with the public.
