Description

“Raja Ravi Varma painted women the way India saw them — not as they were told to appear for Western eyes, but as they lived within their own grandeur. Adorned, assured, fully themselves. His canvases were reproduced and distributed across the country as calendar art and poster prints, entering homes that had never been to a gallery and never needed one.
He made art democratic. He made Indian beauty visible to Indians.
Maachis takes his most iconic figure and places her inside the oldest democratic art form India ever had — the matchbox label — to make a declaration that feels as urgent now as it has ever been.
In a world fractured by conflict, Make Art Not War is not a slogan. It is a position. A choice about what gets your energy and what doesn’t. A reminder that the act of making something beautiful is itself a form of resistance — that to sit down with a pencil or a paintbrush or a wooden matchbox and create is to insist, quietly but completely, that the world still has room for that.
Ravi Varma’s woman does not look afraid. She looks like she has somewhere to be.
Handcrafted in ivory wood, 68 × 48 × 22 mm, dual magnetic closures, thirty safety matches. Includes a Maachis postcard, striker stickers, and a refill bundle. The gift for the artist, the activist, the person who believes that beauty is not frivolous — it is necessary.
Make art. Light the match.”

About Maachis
In India, matchboxes were once more than everyday objects — they were canvases for art, politics, and storytelling. Sitting unnoticed in pockets and kitchen drawers, they carried bold designs, cultural icons, and fragments of a now forgotten history. From mythological motifs to political satire, from local mascots to film stars - these miniature prints reflected who we were and what we believed in. But like many things analog, matchbox art too has slowly faded, replaced by mass production and digital minimalist design. Maachis is an art revival project that is reimagining these tiny canvases as a modern medium of storytelling. We celebrate the intersection of design and culture and aim to give new life to India's forgotten matchbox art in the form of bold, handcrafted pieces.
