Description

“The word sundari means beautiful. The vintage Indian matchbox label knew exactly what that meant — and it was never what capitalism later decided.
The Sundari labels of mid-20th century India featured women who looked like the women of India. Dark-skinned, full-figured, adorned in jewellery that meant something, wearing the kind of confidence that comes from belonging somewhere completely. These labels were not aspirational in the Western sense. They were mirrors. They showed the women who bought those matchboxes themselves — and told them they were beautiful.
Somewhere along the way, that stopped.
Capitalism arrived with a different idea of beauty. Fairness creams. Specific body types. A narrow, exported standard that had nothing to do with what Indian beauty actually looked like and everything to do with what it could be made to want.
Maachis’ Sundari is a reimagining of the old matchbox art — a reclamation of that original mirror. This is Indian beauty as it has always existed, in its full diversity. Dark and light. Round and angular. Adorned and bare. Every version of the sundari that the vintage labels knew and that the beauty industry spent decades trying to erase.
She’s back. She was always here.
Handcrafted in ivory wood, 68 × 48 × 22 mm, dual magnetic closures, thirty safety matches inside. Comes with a Maachis postcard, striker stickers, and a refill bundle. The gift for the woman who was never the problem. The gift for everyone who is done with the narrow version.
Beautiful. Always was.”

About Maachis
In India, matchboxes were once more than everyday objects — they were canvases for art, politics, and storytelling. Sitting unnoticed in pockets and kitchen drawers, they carried bold designs, cultural icons, and fragments of a now forgotten history. From mythological motifs to political satire, from local mascots to film stars - these miniature prints reflected who we were and what we believed in. But like many things analog, matchbox art too has slowly faded, replaced by mass production and digital minimalist design. Maachis is an art revival project that is reimagining these tiny canvases as a modern medium of storytelling. We celebrate the intersection of design and culture and aim to give new life to India's forgotten matchbox art in the form of bold, handcrafted pieces.
