Description

There are musicians who play an instrument. And there are musicians who become it.Zakir Hussain was the second kind.He shaped percussion into a global language — a vocabulary that crossed every boundary of genre, geography, and generation. The soul of Shakti. The pulse behind Ravi Shankar’s iconic sound. The man who sat down at a tabla and made the entire world lean in. He played with his hands and with his whole life, and the beats went straight into the chest of everyone listening. This matchbox is Maachis’ tribute to the maestro. The Tabla Maestro label draws from the visual tradition of the Indian tribute matchbox — the labels that once honoured public figures, celebrated achievements, and made icons out of the everyday and the extraordinary alike. We bring that tradition forward for Ustad Zakir Hussain, whose loss India is still learning to carry. His name, his instrument, his years — all on a wooden matchbox small enough to hold in your palm, large enough to hold what he meant.Handcrafted in ivory wood, 68 × 48 × 22 mm, dual magnetic closures, thirty safety matches. Includes a Maachis postcard, striker stickers, and a refill bundle. A collector’s piece for every music lover, every tabla student, every person who sat in a concert hall or in front of a YouTube video at 2am and felt something shift.Gift it to the musician in your life. Keep it for yourself. Light a match and listen.

About Maachis
In India, matchboxes were once more than everyday objects — they were canvases for art, politics, and storytelling. Sitting unnoticed in pockets and kitchen drawers, they carried bold designs, cultural icons, and fragments of a now forgotten history. From mythological motifs to political satire, from local mascots to film stars - these miniature prints reflected who we were and what we believed in. But like many things analog, matchbox art too has slowly faded, replaced by mass production and digital minimalist design. Maachis is an art revival project that is reimagining these tiny canvases as a modern medium of storytelling. We celebrate the intersection of design and culture and aim to give new life to India's forgotten matchbox art in the form of bold, handcrafted pieces.
