Mechanisms of Action
CAUTION: Schedule E-1 drug. To be taken only under medical supervision
According to Ayurveda, the action of Sarpagandha Vati is on ‘Manovahastrotas’ which helps in restoring normal functions of brain and inducing sleep naturally. It dilates the blood vessels to lower the blood pressure. ‘Vata’ humor controls the body’s motor-nervous mechanism and the drug has the ability to pacify aggravated or vitiated Vata in the individuals having high blood pressure and sleeplessness. The modern science explains its mechanism of action in the following way-
High Blood
Pressure
Reserpine, an alkaloid in Rauwolfia reduces BP by decreasing the activity of central and peripheral noradrenergic neurons. Reserpine results in a rapid reduction in cardiac output, heart rate, and peripheral vascular resistance.
An antihypertensive that depletes stores of catecholamines and 5-hydroxytryptamine in many organs, including the brain and adrenal medulla. Depression of sympathetic nerve function results in a decreased heart rate and a lowering of arterial blood pressure.

Insomnia
The depletion of catecholamines and 5-hydroxytryptamine from the brain is thought to be the mechanism of the sedative and tranquilizing properties. Therefore, it helps in curbing the unusual excitability or hyper-excitability of the brain; leading it a state of rest and calmness to bring sleep and fighting insomnia.
