What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical compound present in the cannabis plant. We understand CBD in close relation to another chemical compound present in cannabis—THC. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the component responsible for the high cannabis is so famous for.

Unlike THC, CBD does not have intoxicating effects on the body. It is, in fact, a therapeutic compound that helps in managing pain and inflammation and induces a sense of calm in the body.

The richest source of CBD is the hemp plant. It is a variety of cannabis that naturally contains high amounts of CBD and low amounts of THC. CBD comes from the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant and is used in products such as oils, edibles, creams, and capsules.

CBD vs. THC

CBD and THC are two of the many cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant. Because these are different compounds, they interact with the human body differently, showing different effects.

Different varieties of cannabis contain cannabinoids in varying amounts. The two most famous varieties are hemp (which contains high amounts of CBD) and marijuana (which contains high amounts of THC).

CBD is non-intoxicating in nature. That is to say, CBD does not get you high.

CBD oil is the most common form of using CBD. It comes from the stalks, flowers, and buds of the hemp plant.

The term CBD oil is really a catch-all term used to describe CBD extracts in general.

When you head out to buy CBD oil in India, you are most likely to come across the following forms of CBD oil:

CBD Oil Drops & Tinctures

CBD oil drops and tinctures are liquid CBD extracts that are consumed orally. Oil drops have an oil base using organic oils like MCT, coconut, or hemp seed oil as the carrier.

CBD tinctures have an alcohol base. They are a simple and smokeless way of consuming CBD. CBD tinctures are consumed orally, by directly placing them under the tongue.

Oil Drops and Tinctures come in glass bottles with a built-in dropper in the cap. This dropper has quantity markings (in mL), which makes it easy to measure each dosage.

CBD Capsules

CBD Capsules are hard or soft gel capsules that contained CBD oil. These are similar to the traditional tablets we consume as medicine.

Capsules are a simple and discrete way of consuming CBD. They are directly consumed with a glass of water.

CBD capsules have a pre-set amount of CBD which remains the same in each serving.

For example, if you have a bottle of 30 capsules with 750mg CBD, then each capsule will contain 750/30 = 25mg of CBD.

This amount remains the same in each capsule. CBD capsules are, therefore, a convenient way of maintaining a consistent dosage of CBD.

CBD Edibles

CBD edibles are ready-to-eat food and drink items that are infused with CBD oil. Some common examples of CBD edibles are gummies, chocolates, tea, and coffee.

Like edibles, capsules are also a simple and discrete way of consuming cannabis.

However, these contain additional ingredients such as flavouring agents, sweeteners, and preservatives.

The dosage in CBD edibles is also pre-set. For example, if you have a pack of 30 gummies with 750mg CBD, then each gummy will contain 750/30 = 25mg of CBD.

This amount remains the same in each gummy. CBD Edibles are, therefore, a convenient way of maintaining consistent dosage.

CBD Vapes

Another common form of consuming CBD is in the form of vape oils.

PLEASE NOTE
Vaping is illegal in India. We recommend you to adopt alternative methods of using CBD.

What is the difference between CBD Oil and Hemp Oil?

CBD Oil, CBD Hemp Oil, Hemp CBD Oil, and Hemp Oil are some of the common phrases you will encounter when you’re out to buy CBD oil. In India, the majority of the industry uses these terms interchangeably but it is not right to do so.

CBD oil is a therapeutic product containing varying concentrations of CBD to provide relevant therapeutic effects. CBD oil comes from the leaves, stalks, and flowers of the hemp plant.

Hemp oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant. It is a nutritional and skincare supplement that does not have medicinal effects.

Types of CBD Oil

There are three types of CBD oil you can buy in India:

CBD Isolate

Isolates are the more commonly used CBD oil extracts in India. A CBD isolate is an extract that contains only and only CBD. All the other chemical compounds present in the cannabis plant are removed to extract just CBD.

Isolates are the purest form of using CBD. Here, no other cannabinoids or chemical compounds interfere with the workings of CBD.

CBD isolates are typically extracted from hemp because it naturally contains low to zero amounts of THC. CBD isolates do not have intoxicating effects.

Isolates contain only and only CBD and no other cannabinoids, terpenes, or chemical compounds. These are the easiest and safest way to use CBD, especially for beginners.

These extracts offer the therapeutic benefits of only CBD.

Broad-spectrum CBD Oil

Broad-spectrum CBD oil contains CBD in addition to other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and essential oils that are naturally present in the cannabis plant.

However, broad-spectrum extracts are subject to procedures that completely remove the THC.

In broad-spectrum CBD, all the cannabinoids work together to enhance each other’s therapeutic effects.

In comparison to isolates, broad-spectrum CBD oil provides a more wholesome therapeutic benefit.

Broad-spectrum extracts do not contain THC and do not have any intoxicating effects.

Broad-spectrum CBD | Buy CBD in India on itsHemp

Full-spectrum CBD Oil

Full-spectrum CBD oil is an extract that contains CBD in addition to other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, essential oils, etc. that are naturally present in the cannabis plant.

Full-spectrum extracts retain the complete original chemical profile of a cannabis plant.

That is to say, full-spectrum extracts contain varying levels of THC.

In full-spectrum extracts, all the cannabinoids work together to enhance each other’s therapeutic benefits.

However, unlike broad-spectrum extracts, these also have the therapeutic benefits of THC.

In comparison then, the effects of CBD extracts can be understood as:

Full-spectrum > Broad-spectrum > Isolates

What are the benefits of CBD oil?

CBD is a therapeutic compound that can be used as a medicine and wellness or personal care supplement.

CBD as a Medicine

CBD has anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces inflammation throughout the body and provides relief from inflammatory and neuropathic pain.

The anxiolytic properties of CBD make it a great relaxant, proving helpful in reducing stress and anxiety.

CBD can also improve the quality of sleep, reduce the frequency and intensity of epileptic seizures, and balance cognitive functioning.

CBD for Skincare

Cannabidiol has anti-oxidant properties which help improve skincare regimes. CBD oil helps in reducing inflammation and irritation on the skin, helping with acne and psoriasis.

CBD also inhibits the growth of skin cancer cells helping in conditions like melanoma. CBD can also regulate the function of melanocytes, the cells that give skin its colour.

There are about 30 health conditions, studied as of now, that CBD can provide relief from. The major ones among these are anxiety, depression, arthritis, chronic pain, epilepsy, MS, and sleep disorders.

How is CBD Oil Made?

There are 4 common processes for extracting CBD oil:

Whole Plant Extraction

A process where the whole of the source plant is used to extract the formula. Here, all the components present in the source plant are preserved in the final extract.

The benefit of this process is that a wide range of cannabinoids is obtained. The combination of cannabinoids, as opposed to just CBD, can affect multiple targets within the body and enhance the overall effect.

This is the most common type of process for formulating full-spectrum extracts.

Isolate Extraction

A process where the source plant (preferably hemp) is processed time and again to completely separate the CBD.

Unlike the whole plant extract, an isolate contains only and only CBD and no trace(s) of any other cannabinoid.

Alcohol Extraction

A process where alcohol (commonly ethanol or isopropyl) combines as a solvent with the dried plant and pulls out the THC, terpenes, and other cannabinoids. This method works efficiently for creating CBD tinctures.

CO2 Extraction

The most common extraction process, where carbon dioxide reacts with cannabinoids and then separates them. This helps in extracting not only CBD but other cannabinoids as well.

How to use CBD?

Different CBD products require different methods of application.

CBD Oil Drops and Tinctures:

CBD oil drops and tinctures. can be used:

  • Sublingual Consumption: refers to directly placing CBD oil directly under the tongue. We let the drops absorc for 30-45 seconds before swallowing.

This is one of the fastest methods to experience the effects of CBD. Through this method, the CBD reaches the bloodstream in 5-10 minutes and effects are felt within 20 minutes of consumption. The effects last for 1-2 hours.
  • Addition to Food: refers to mixing CBD oil drops to everyday food and drink items. This method helps mask the strong taste and aroma of CBD.

Through this method, CBD first passes through the digestive tract before entering the bloodstream. This process can take 40-50 minutes. The effects felt within 1 hour of consumption, lasting for 4-6 hours.
  • Topical Application: refers to massaging CBD oil externally on the skin over aching muscles or joints. This method is most suitable for managing localised pain and inflammation such as arthritic pain, muscle injury, etc.

Here, CBD does not enter the bloodstream but interacts with the local cannabinoid receptors to provide relief. The effects of topical application are visible within 10 minutes of application and last for 1-2 hours.

Capsules

CBD Capsules should be consumed like any other vitamin or supplement. Simply ingest the capsules with water after a meal as prescribed by your physician.

CBD capsules pass through the liver and the digestive system before entering the bloodstream. This process can take 45-50 minutes. Therefore, CBD capsules show effect within 1 hour of consumption and the effects last for 4-6 hours.

Edibles and Beverages

CBD Edibles such as chocolates and gummies can be consumed like treats as per your recommended dosage. Two common ways to consume edibles are eating them like a dessert and as an evening snack.

CBD Beverages are refreshing and relaxing drinks that help you energise for the day ahead and unwind after a hard day. These may be used with breakfast or before bed. Some CBD drinks also prove highly effective after workouts promoting healthy muscle recovery.

Edibles also pass through the liver and the digestive system and therefore show effect within an hour of consumption. The effects edibles last for 4-6 hours.

CBD Topicals

Another way to experience the effects of CBD is by topical application. Simply massage the balm or cream on the affected area. Through this method, the CBD does not enter the bloodstream but interacts with the local cannabinoid receptors in the body.

CBD balms and creams are good for particularly targeting localised pain and sore skin.

Since 2019, the government of India allows the use of CBD (with low amounts of THC) and leaf extracts of cannabis (under Ayurvedic medicine). At the same time, the government discourages the use of flower and flower extracts of cannabis.

When it comes to CBD in particular, the laws in India are quite unclear. The prime source of CBD is hemp whose cultivation is allowed only with special permission.

Cannabis leaf (Vijaya) extracts are Schedule E-1 drugs regulated by the AYUSH Ministry and the Excise Department of India. These can be purchased by presenting a valid prescription from an Ayurvedic doctor.

CBD products are not approved by the FDA or the AYUSH Ministry.

What are the side effects of CBD?

CBD is a generally safe and well-tolerated chemical compound for people of all ages. However, since the body needs time to adjust to any foreign substance, it is possible to experience some side effects.

The most common side effects of CBD are:

  • Dry Mouth
  • Nausea
  • Drowsiness (this should not be confused with intoxication)
  • Indigestion & Gastrointestinal Issues
  • Diarrhoea

As you continue to use CBD regularly, the side effects subside. Staying hydrated and eating cold foods help manage these symptoms.

When using CBD topically, you may experience a rash. Apply ice or aloe vera over the rash. If the rash intensifies or begins to itch, stop using CBD and consult a medical professional.

Things to Know Before You Buy CBD in India

There are some important things to consider before you buy CBD oil in India.

Where is my CBD coming from?

The source of the CBD oil you’re about to buy determines the effects it will give you. Understanding the source of the CBD extract helps you plan the dosage and frequency as well as prepare for the possible side effects.

As mentioned above, two products labelled full-spectrum can be different depending on the source plant. Make sure to check if you’re using a full-spectrum hemp extract or a full-spectrum Vijaya extract.

What type of CBD am I looking for?

It is important to understand whether you’re looking for an isolate, a broad-spectrum, or a full-spectrum extract. Each of these extracts has its own pros and cons and produce different effects on the body.

Moreover, the type of CBD you’ll be using will also largely affect the dosage and frequency of use.

What is the amount of CBD in each dosage?

Dosage is an important part of using CBD. Therefore, you must carefully check the concentration and content of CBD on the labels. These should help you calculate the amount of CBD you will be taking with each serving.

CBD oil drops and tinctures come with a built-in dropper that can be used to measure each individual dosage. To calculate the dosage in CBD oil drops and tinctures, look at the strength and quantity of the oil.

If you have a 30ml bottle of 1500mg, then each ml contains 1500/30=50mg of CBD.
If your dosage is 25mg, you need to fill half the dropper (till 0.5ml) mark to consume 25mg of CBD.

Oil drops and tinctures give you the liberty to increase or decrease every single dosage. If you wish to consume 50mg of CBD, you can simply take a full dropper (filled up to the 1ml mark).

Measuring the dosage in CBD edibles and capsules in fairly simple. These have a pre-set amount of dosage that gets equally divided among the total number of servings.
For example, if you have a pack of 60 capsules with 3000mg CBD, then each capsule will have 3000/60= 50mg of CBD. This dosage will remain the same in each capsule.

Does my product contain THC?

This is important for people who want to use CBD but are inhibitive about the intoxicating effects of THC.

Unless you’re looking for the combined effects of all components, you should check the label and understand which cannabinoids are present in what percentage.

How will it interact with my current medication?

There is little research on CBD’s interaction with other commonly used drugs. But it is available. If you are under prescribed medication, you should definitely read up on CBD’s interaction with any allopathic drugs you may currently be using. The best way is to consult your physician.

We have collated a list of 20 important questions one should answer for themselves before buying any CBD product. These will make the process of adopting CBD easier.

    What Is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is the next most abundant
component of the Cannabis sativa seed types. It’s one of over 100 phytocannabinoids that have been recognized in cannabis and hemp plants.

Unlike THC, the main constituent in cannabis, cannabidiol will not induce intoxicating effects.

This business lead scientists to originally think that CBD was an inactive compound, but eventually, it was uncovered
that CBD initiates multiple actions in the central anxious system and even has an impact on the effects of THC.

CBD is gaining a great deal of attention recently because of
    its potential health benefits.

So how exactly does CBD cause you to feel? To begin with, it
doesn’t make you feel high. Instead, it typically has calming and warming
effects on your body. It is thought to interact with receptors throughout your body to keep carefully the endocannabinoid system in balance.
This is what is believed to enable cannabidiol’s results.

The shipping cost is almost equal to the cost of the product. Right now I am getting my dose of CBD from one of my friends Ayurveda Company but they do not manufacture potent enough capsules. Merely 5Mg CBD/Capsule. My daily requirement is 40Mg of CBD, need to take 8 of those capsules a day.
I hope we legalise this quick. A hell lot of potential for you here.
    #iAdvocateHemp

    1. Shiva Kumar says:

      Hey Bhuwan,

I’m not trying to sell some CBD products here, though I own a company in the US. You are right, the shipping costs are ridiculously high. Besides all CBD is not the same, there is no one brand or type of CBD method, which suits all consumers. I was curious on how did you know that you require 40mg daily? A stronger CBD Tincture would be a better method, since anyone can increase or decrease depending on the needs or pain issues. Also because of the first pass digestive system, your body looses a lot of the potency of the capsule during its digestive process. One last thing to remember is though the Indian market is still at its infancy, be aware of mislabeled products, scammers, do your own due diligence on where its being made, what ingredients are used, what does the label define, what dosage instructions are mentioned and always consult with your Doctor if you are on any heavy medications.

I have been doing an extensive research about CBD oil, its benefits, availability in India, what forms it is available in, etc etc. I have read plentiful books & reports concerning to this topic and also saw many queries and replies which have been shared on this platform. I have clarified most of my doubts concerning CBD as a product, usage, etc. but still finding difficulty in understanding the economics involved in moving ahead with the import, sale and purchase of it in India. I have been working with a company to launch broad spectrum Cbd which is THC free. Moreover, there is already a company in India which is manufacturing & selling cbd oil in one of the states which has legalized to grow hemp for medicinal work. Their products are also recognized by Ministry of AYUSH.

    Now my queries are:

    1. Should I be moving ahead with my plan to import the products of this specific company and sell them over different platforms in India?

    2. And if the 1st answer is yes, What documentations are required to initiate the business?

    3. What kind of duty will be incurred during import of the products?

    4. Like other foreign entities selling cbd oil in India, who is paying for the customs upon arrival/delivery?

I am seeking out for more information on this front and also have placed order of some products to understand first hand information that can be gathered as and when the products arrive. It will be of great help if someone out there on this platform can assist me in collecting more information and move ahead with a possible launch of the products. Thanks and regards to all the readers.

This platform provides a lot of information and am happy that so many are advocating for medical cannabis.

    1. Hi Rahul!
We’re glad that you reached out and you found value in the work we are doing.
Even though there is no right or wrong answer to your question, we wouldn’t discourage you to go ahead with your plans.
The Indian market, as well as most Indian state governments, are warming up to idea of Cannabis products.
But, since there are no guidelines around CBD at all in India (the law doesn’t differentiate between various Cannabinoids from the Cannabis plant)
it’s difficult to say what documentation is needed for the import.
There are a bunch of people importing and selling CBD products in India. There are also brands which are dropshipping products directly to the customers and the customs are generally paid by the person receiving the products.
If you’d like an in-depth discussion on the topic, feel free to reach out to us at partner@itshemp.in

    Hey,
I was curious about the fact that why almost all the CBD products are sold online? why cosmetic products having CBD in it or any CBD products for wellness use is not available in retail markets or shopping malls? is there any law that prevents them from doing that?
I’d be glad if you guys clear my confusion
    Thanks

    1. Hey Drashti!
This is a very interesting question.
CBD and Ayurvedic Cannabis products are available offline in a number of places. However, since the concept isn’t yet widespread and accepted yet, most people prefer selling online to reach a wider audience.
Additionally, the Indian Cannabis industry is very nascent right now and hence it’s going to take some time before you start finding all these products in malls and stores around you.

    Hi,
I would like to know if it is possible to import CBD in large quantities, 1 kg or so.
Its for my sister who needs at least 1000mg dosage of CBD a day, for her psychiatric issues. This dosage was approved by her doctors at NIMHANS.
I have bought 100g bottles of broad spectrum CBD from a company named freshbros in USA. Even though customs delayed it a few days, they have released it everytime( in Bangalore). But then we tried to import 1 kg and it was not released by customs and we had to return the shipment.(This was in Cochin airport, Kerala).

Is there any possible way to do an import of 1 kg CBD. We tried to do once and failed in Kerala, even though provided documents for medical condition.

Can alternative medicine help me manage my menstrual cramps? If so, what kind of product would you recommend? Is it safe for me to use your product, and can i safely purchase it from your store without having to worry about legal hassles, or worse facing persecution? I’m from Cochin, Kerala.

  46. margub says:

Hi, can you please recommend a doctor to prescribe cbd oil for my brother? He is an epileptic patient.

    1. Hey! Hope your brother is doing fine. CBD oil does not need to be prescribed. You can buy isolate, broad-spectrum, or full-spectrum CBD oil drops without a prescription. This full-spectrum CBD by Endoca is a good product to begin with.
You would need a prescription for Ayurvedic Cannabis medicines. This is because of the high amount of THC (the intoxicating compound) in them. You can book an online consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor here.
