What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical compound present in the cannabis plant. We understand CBD in close relation to another chemical compound in cannabis, THC. Tetrahydrocannabinol is the component that causes the high when we smoke cannabis.

Unlike THC, CBD does not have intoxicating effects on the body. It is, in fact, a therapeutic compound that helps in managing pain and inflammation and provides a sense of calm.

The richest source of CBD is the hemp plant. It is a variety of cannabis that naturally contains high amounts of CBD. CBD comes from the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant and is used in products such as oils, edibles, creams, and capsules.

CBD and THC are two of the many cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant. Because these are different compounds, they interact with the human body differently showing different effects.

Different varieties of cannabis contain cannabinoids in varying amounts. The two most famous varieties are hemp (which contains high amounts of CBD) and marijuana (which contains high amounts of THC).

CBD is non-psychotropic in nature i.e. it does not have intoxicating effects. That is to say, CBD does not get you high.

How does CBD work?

CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in the human body. This system is responsible for maintaining regular functions and feelings in the body.

CBD is a cannabinoid and the human body also produces cannabinoids on its own (called endocannabinoids).

These two types of cannabinoids have a similar structure. Cannabinoids from the cannabis plant, therefore, mimic the cannabinoids in the human body and interact with their respective receptors.

Different cannabinoids interact in different ways and therefore have different effects on the body.

Primarily, CBD encourages the production of the body’s natural endocannabinoids. But it can also interact with opioid, dopamine, and serotonin receptors.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is the most common form of using CBD. It comes from the stalks, flowers, and buds of the hemp plant.

The term CBD oil is really a catch-all term used to describe CBD extracts in general.

When you head out to buy CBD oil in India, you are most likely to come across the following forms of CBD oil:

CBD Tinctures

Liquid extracts that are alcohol-based and consumed orally. They are a simple and smokeless way of consuming CBD. These are consumed sublingually i.e. by direct placement under the tongue. Tinctures come in glass bottles with a built-in dropper in the lid to measure dosage.

CBD Capsules

Pills and tablets filled with CBD oil that are swallowed like other medicinal capsules. Capsules offer a simple and discrete way of consuming CBD. The dosage in capsules is pre-set and remains constant throughout. Their packaging resembles that of vitamin and dietary supplements.

CBD Edibles

Ready-to-eat products that use CBD oil as an ingredient. Some common examples are gummies, chocolates, tea, coffee, etc. Edibles also offer a discrete way of consuming CBD with consistent dosage in each piece.

Another common form of consuming CBD is in the form of vape oils. However, vaping is illegal in India and we recommend users to adopt alternative methods.

CBD Oil vs. Hemp Oil

CBD Oil, CBD Hemp Oil, Hemp CBD Oil, and Hemp Oil are some of the common phrases you will encounter when you buy CBD oil.

In India, the majority of the industry uses these terms interchangeably but it is not right to do so.

The idea of CBD oil is to have a prominent percentage or concentration of CBD as a component to provide relevant therapeutic effects.

Hemp Oil refers to the oil that comes from the seeds of the hemp plant. While this oil will also contain CBD, the percentage will be low and will not give you the true therapeutic benefits of CBD. Hemp oil, as an independent product, has several health benefits. It can easily be added to our personal care routine and can be used as a cooking oil.

Types of CBD Oil

There are three different types of CBD oils that any buyer should know about:

Full-spectrum CBD Oil

An extract that contains all the naturally occurring compounds in the source plant. Full-spectrum CBD oil thus contains terpenes, essential oils, and other cannabinoids in addition to CBD, including THC.

Full-spectrum extracts offer better relief than the other two types of extracts. This is because all the compounds of cannabis work together in synergy to provide enhanced therapeutic benefits. The presence of THC, however, may cause little to moderate intoxication.

Two products labelled full-spectrum can be different. The chemical profile of the extract depends on the plant used for extraction.

For example, if the source plant is hemp, the full-spectrum hemp extract will naturally contain high amounts of CBD and low to negligible amounts of THC. However, if another variety of cannabis is used for extraction, such as Vijaya, the full-spectrum extract will contain different amounts of CBD, THC, and other chemical compounds.

CBD Isolate

Isolates are the more commonly used CBD oil extracts in India. The purest form of CBD, CBD Isolate, is produced by removing all other compounds found in the plant. CBD isolates are typically extracted from hemp because it naturally contains low to non-existent amounts of THC.

Isolates contain only and only CBD and no other cannabinoids, terpenes, or chemical compounds. These are the easiest and safest way to use CBD, especially for beginners.

These extracts offer the therapeutic benefits of only CBD. While the relief they provide is just as significant, in comparison to full and broad-spectrum extracts, they are less potent.

Broad-spectrum CBD Oil

The third type of CBD oil you can buy in India is broad-spectrum CBD extract. This is a mix between CBD isolate and full-spectrum CBD. It contains CBD along with other cannabinoids, terpenes, and chemical compounds except for THC.

Like full-spectrum CBD, other compounds present in the plant are preserved in the extract. But like CBD isolate, THC is completely removed.

Broad-spectrum extracts also offer enhanced therapeutic benefits without the intoxicating effects of THC.

What are the benefits of CBD oil?

CBD as a Medicine

CBD is a relaxant that works well for inflammatory and neuropathic pain.

CBD oil supports healthy muscle recovery and provides relief from arthritic pain.

It also helps in controlling epileptic seizures, cancer pain, and insomnia.

CBD for Skincare

Cannabidiol has anti-oxidant properties which help improve skincare regimes.

CBD oil helps in reducing inflammation and irritation on the skin.

For this reason, it helps with conditions such as acne and psoriasis.

There are about 30 health conditions, studied as of now, that CBD can provide relief from. The major ones among these are anxiety, depression, arthritis, chronic pain, epilepsy, MS, and sleep disorders.

How to make CBD oil?

There are 4 common processes for extracting CBD oil:

Whole Plant Extraction

A process where the whole of the source plant is used to extract the formula. Here, all the components present in the source plant are preserved in the final extract.

The benefit of this process is that a wide range of cannabinoids is obtained. The combination of cannabinoids, as opposed to just CBD, can affect multiple targets within the body and enhance the overall effect.

This is the most common type of process for formulating full-spectrum extracts.

Isolate Extraction

A process where the source plant (preferably hemp) is processed time and again to completely separate the CBD.

Unlike the whole plant extract, an isolate contains only and only CBD and no trace(s) of any other cannabinoid.

Alcohol Extraction

A process where alcohol (commonly ethanol or isopropyl) combines as a solvent with the dried plant and pull out the THC, terpenes, and other cannabinoids. This method works efficiently for creating CBD tinctures.

CO2 Extraction

The most common extraction process where carbon dioxide reacts with cannabinoids and then separates them. This helps in extracting not only CBD but other cannabinoids as well.

How to use CBD?

Different CBD products require different methods of application.

CBD Oil Drops and Tinctures:

CBD oil drops and tinctures. can be used:

  • Sublingually: by placing directly under the tongue. Let the drops absorb for 30-45 seconds and then swallow. Through this method, the CBD directly reaches the bloodstream and effects are felt within 5-20 minutes.
  • By Adding to food: Mix the desired dosage of CBD oil drops to your food items such as salads or smoothies. Through this method, CBD first passes through the digestive tract before entering the bloodstream. The effects are noticeable within 1-2 hours.

CBD Capsules should be consumed like any other vitamin and supplements. Simply ingest the capsules with water after a meal as prescribed by your physician.

Edibles and Beverages

CBD Edibles such as chocolates and gummies can be consumed like treats as per your recommended dosage. Two common ways to consume edibles are eating them like a dessert and as an evening snack.

CBD Beverages are refreshing and relaxing drinks that help you energise for the day ahead and unwind after a hard day. These may be used with breakfast or before bed. Some CBD drinks also prove highly effective after workouts promoting healthy muscle recovery.

Balms and Creams

Another way to experience the effects of CBD is by topical application. Simply massage the balm or cream on the affected area. Through this method, the CBD does not enter the bloodstream but interacts with the local cannabinoid receptors in the body.

CBD balms and creams are good for particularly targeting localised pain and sore skin.

As of 2019, it is legal to buy and consume CBD products with low amounts of THC in India, irrespective of the medical condition of the user.

CBD products are not approved by the FDA or the AYUSH Ministry and thus, everyone uses CBD at their own risk. Therefore, consulting a medical professional before using CBD is recommended.

What are the side effects of CBD?

CBD is a generally safe substance to use. No fatal overdoses of CBD have been reported. However, since the body needs time to adjust to any foreign substance, it is possible to witness some side effects.

The most common side effects of CBD are dry mouth, nausea, drowsiness, and gastrointestinal issues.

What to ask yourself before buying CBD products?

There are some important things you should consider before you buy CBD oil in India.

Where is my CBD coming from?

The source of the CBD oil you’re about to buy determines the effects it will give you. Understanding the source of the CBD extract helps you plan the dosage and frequency.

As mentioned above, two products labelled full-spectrum can be different depending on the source plant. Make sure to check if you’re using a full-spectrum CBD extract or a full-spectrum Vijaya extract.

What kind of CBD am I looking for?

It is important to understand whether you’re looking for an isolate, broad-spectrum, or full-spectrum extract. Each of these extracts works differently on the human body showing different effects.

The type of CBD oil extract you buy will influence the frequency of use, dosage, and effects.

What is the amount of CBD in each dosage?

Dosage is an important part of using CBD. Therefore, you must carefully check the concentration and content of CBD on the labels. These should help you calculate the amount of CBD you will be taking with each serving.

Capsules and edibles have a pre-set dosage. These are usually boxes that contain definite amounts of pieces with the same amount of CBD in each piece.

In the case of oils and tinctures, you need to measure your dosage with the help of a dropper.

Does my product contain THC?

This is important for people who want to use CBD but are inhibitive about the psychoactive effects of THC.

Unless you’re looking for the combined effects of all components, you should check the label and understand which cannabinoids in what percentage are present.

The quantity of THC is also what tells us if a particular CBD oil is legal. Low-THC (less than 1%) CBD oil is legal in India.

How will it interact with my current medication?

There is little research on CBD’s interaction with other commonly used drugs. But it is available. If you are under prescribed medication, you should definitely read up on CBD’s interaction with any allopathic drugs you may currently be using. The best way is to consult your physician.

We have collated a list of 20 important questions one should answer for themselves before buying any CBD product. These will make the process of adopting CBD easier.

Here is a list of things you should do before making an online purchase for a CBD product in India:

Understand Legality

The regulations about CBD products in India are unclear. It is legal to buy and consume CBD products that contain low amounts of THC. For this reason, you should pay attention to the percentage amount of each compound in a product.

The next step is to research—not only about CBD but also manufacturers and sellers. The growth of CBD and the cannabis industries in India are picking up pace. It is important to understand which brand offers what and how is it different from the other ones.

Here is an extensive list of companies in India that are currently working with hemp, CBD, and cannabis.

Visit Platforms

Because you can only buy CBD oil online, stalk the seller platforms as much as you can.

Online platforms have no means of face-to-face interactions. Therefore, their website should be able to tell you everything you need to know.

Anyone selling CBD to you should be able to answer your questions. It is important to communicate with the team and understand the particulars of the products you’re interested in.

This could be through their contact page, social media platforms, or emails. But they should be able to answer your questions clearly and help you make confident decisions. Only then can you trust them.

Go back and verify whatever the seller platform tells you. From legal information to the extraction process and cannabinoid concentration, cross-check their information with other, generic information on the internet.

Once you’re satisfied, you can buy as many CBD products as you want! And maybe some more.

  3. What Is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is the next most abundant
component of the Cannabis sativa seed types. It’s one of over 100 phytocannabinoids that have been recognized in cannabis and hemp plants.

Unlike THC, the main constituent in cannabis, cannabidiol will not induce intoxicating effects.

This business lead scientists to originally think that CBD was an inactive compound, but eventually, it was uncovered
that CBD initiates multiple actions in the central anxious system and even has an impact on the effects of THC.

CBD is gaining a great deal of attention recently because of
    its potential health benefits.

So how exactly does CBD cause you to feel? To begin with, it
doesn’t make you feel high. Instead, it typically has calming and warming
effects on your body. It is thought to interact with receptors throughout your body to keep carefully the endocannabinoid system in balance.
This is what is believed to enable cannabidiol’s results.

CBD is still in the grey when it comes to import & use in India. I would recommend that you can try bringing CBD chewing gums as regular gums in small quantities, as it won’t raise suspicion at customs.
We are also trying to develop some of these products in-house with support from CBD companies in Amsterdam & Isreal.

  6. Bhuwan says:

Do you guys have any plans of having a set up in India?
The shipping cost is almost equal to the cost of the product. Right now I am getting my dose of CBD from one of my friends Ayurveda Company but they do not manufacture potent enough capsules. Merely 5Mg CBD/Capsule. My daily requirement is 40Mg of CBD, need to take 8 of those capsules a day.
I hope we legalise this quick. A hell lot of potential for you here.

    1. Shiva Kumar says:

      Hey Bhuwan,

I’m not trying to sell some CBD products here, though I own a company in the US. You are right, the shipping costs are ridiculously high. Besides all CBD is not the same, there is no one brand or type of CBD method, which suits all consumers. I was curious on how did you know that you require 40mg daily? A stronger CBD Tincture would be a better method, since anyone can increase or decrease depending on the needs or pain issues. Also because of the first pass digestive system, your body looses a lot of the potency of the capsule during its digestive process. One last thing to remember is though the Indian market is still at its infancy, be aware of mislabeled products, scammers, do your own due diligence on where its being made, what ingredients are used, what does the label define, what dosage instructions are mentioned and always consult with your Doctor if you are on any heavy medications.

      1. Hi Shiva!
We couldn’t have said it any better.
Interestingly, there are not a lot of resources that give information about products in India. We are actively working on bringing quality CBD Products to Indian markets, with proper documentation, 3rd Party tests and proper usage guidelines.
Feel free to reach out at in case you feel that you’d be able to contribute towards building this industry in India.

  9. Rohit Kamath says:

Is it legal to import CBD products to India?
    What are the customs?

    1. Hi rohit!
As of the latest updates we have its still tricky to import CBD into India, however, people have been importing it for personal use and pain relief.
The customs vary based on each product that is ordered. It is different for edible oils, edibles, tablets, and topical use products.
We are actively creating a list of companies that are shipping to India and are making CBD products available in India.

  12. Ram says:

I have found in flipkart 1000mg cbd oils are these useful?

    1. Hi Ram!
The product that you shared has whole plant extract instead of just CBD mixed with a flavouring agent and carrier oil. It may be effective depending on the usage that you choose. Generally, CBD quantity is lower in whole-plant extract oils, however, they can be used for wellness purpose.

  13. Rahul Gandhi says:

I have been doing an extensive research about CBD oil, its benefits, availability in India, what forms it is available in, etc etc. I have read plentiful books & reports concerning to this topic and also saw many queries and replies which have been shared on this platform. I have clarified most of my doubts concerning CBD as a product, usage, etc. but still finding difficulty in understanding the economics involved in moving ahead with the import, sale and purchase of it in India. I have been working with a company to launch broad spectrum Cbd which is THC free. Moreover, there is already a company in India which is manufacturing & selling cbd oil in one of the states which has legalized to grow hemp for medicinal work. Their products are also recognized by Ministry of AYUSH.

    Now my queries are:

    1. Should I be moving ahead with my plan to import the products of this specific company and sell them over different platforms in India?

    2. And if the 1st answer is yes, What documentations are required to initiate the business?

    3. What kind of duty will be incurred during import of the products?

    4. Like other foreign entities selling cbd oil in India, who is paying for the customs upon arrival/delivery?

I am seeking out for more information on this front and also have placed order of some products to understand first hand information that can be gathered as and when the products arrive. It will be of great help if someone out there on this platform can assist me in collecting more information and move ahead with a possible launch of the products. Thanks and regards to all the readers.

This platform provides a lot of information and am happy that so many are advocating for medical cannabis.

    1. Hi Rahul!
We’re glad that you reached out and you found value in the work we are doing.
Even though there is no right or wrong answer to your question, we wouldn’t discourage you to go ahead with your plans.
The Indian market, as well as most Indian state governments, are warming up to idea of Cannabis products.
But, since there are no guidelines around CBD at all in India (the law doesn’t differentiate between various Cannabinoids from the Cannabis plant)
it’s difficult to say what documentation is needed for the import.
There are a bunch of people importing and selling CBD products in India. There are also brands which are dropshipping products directly to the customers and the customs are generally paid by the person receiving the products.
If you’d like an in-depth discussion on the topic, feel free to reach out to us at

I was curious about the fact that why almost all the CBD products are sold online? why cosmetic products having CBD in it or any CBD products for wellness use is not available in retail markets or shopping malls? is there any law that prevents them from doing that?
I’d be glad if you guys clear my confusion

    1. Hey Drashti!
This is a very interesting question.
CBD and Ayurvedic Cannabis products are available offline in a number of places. However, since the concept isn’t yet widespread and accepted yet, most people prefer selling online to reach a wider audience.
Additionally, the Indian Cannabis industry is very nascent right now and hence it’s going to take some time before you start finding all these products in malls and stores around you.

I would like to know if it is possible to import CBD in large quantities, 1 kg or so.
Its for my sister who needs at least 1000mg dosage of CBD a day, for her psychiatric issues. This dosage was approved by her doctors at NIMHANS.
I have bought 100g bottles of broad spectrum CBD from a company named freshbros in USA. Even though customs delayed it a few days, they have released it everytime( in Bangalore). But then we tried to import 1 kg and it was not released by customs and we had to return the shipment.(This was in Cochin airport, Kerala).

Is there any possible way to do an import of 1 kg CBD. We tried to do once and failed in Kerala, even though provided documents for medical condition.

    Hello Sir,

I suffer from ‎unbearable menstrual cramps. I’m skeptical about using English medicine on the long run, as I have history of PCOS in my family. Can alternative medicine help me manage my menstrual cramps? If so, what kind of product would you recommend? Is it safe for me to use your product, and can i safely purchase it from your store without having to worry about legal hassles, or worse facing persecution? I’m from Cochin, Kerala.

Hi, can you please recommend a doctor to prescribe cbd oil for my brother? He is an epileptic patient.

    1. Hey! Hope your brother is doing fine. CBD oil does not need to be prescribed. You can buy isolate, broad-spectrum, or full-spectrum CBD oil drops without a prescription. This full-spectrum CBD by Endoca is a good product to begin with.
You would need a prescription for Ayurvedic Cannabis medicines. This is because of the high amount of THC (the intoxicating compound) in them. You can book an online consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor here.
